Cancer Support Community Central Ohio and Feel Better Foundation are excited to introduce this new 9-month series for pediatric cancer families. Each monthly class will be dedicated to creating pieces of artwork by specific members of the family. At the end of the series, participants will have the opportunity to display their work at an art exhibit!

Program Schedule

March 12: Image Transfer Collage (Moms Only)

A collage technique will be demonstrated to create transparent images from printed words and pictures that will be attached to a glass frame. The collage images/words may take on any important theme to the individual; self-image. The sensory experience of rubbing away the paper also lends itself to symbolizing a letting go of what we no longer need.

April 9: Hope Kids (Kids 7 to 12)

Young artists will be given an opportunity to put their hopes into writing as a base for a personalized and unique figure. Each figure will be made with fabric and yarn with embellishments of choice, becoming a tangible symbol of hope and resilience. Pediatric cancer warriors and their siblings are both welcome to attend this class.

May 14: Dream Catchers (Teens)

The dream catcher is a handmade craft originated from the Native American culture. Tribes traditionally would create dream catchers as protection for their newborns. Today, many people believe that dreamcatchers can filter out bad dreams and spirits; letting only good dreams and positive thoughts enter the mind. We will be creating our own dreamcatchers through weaving and playful decoration. Final projects may be a space to speak intentions, hopes, and dreams into.

June 11: Papermaking: Seeds of Hope (Adults)

Participants will be invited to express and transform difficult feelings into ones of hope and gratitude through the process of papermaking. Seed paper will be created so that each person will be able to plant and nurture seeds of hope, watching them grow into resilient wildflowers.

July 9: Hope Flowers (Kids 7 to 12)

Bringing color into your life; flowers can represent the beauty in growth and allow us to visualize bright and hopeful centiments while reflecting on what one needs to thrive. A variety of origami flower techniques will be demonstrated and an adjacent space for creating a sand art vase to house the flowers will also be available.

August 12: Memorial Jars (Bereaved)

The jars will be personalized to represent that person’s light in the world, and all participants will come together for a special lighting ceremony to honor their life and loss.

September 10: Flow Art (Moms Only)

Flow art is an exciting experiential in which the paint spreads, mixes, and may form a variety of intricate designs across the canvas. The artist is able to experiment and invite a playfulness into the art-making process. There is little control over the material, lending the process to reflect on how we may relax and let go of our need for control. There is no wrong way to create this piece as it is success oriented with no experience necessary.

October 8: Family Motto (Whole Family)

Family members will create a collaborative artwork using painted handprints on canvas. Each family will work together to come up with a “family motto” which will stand as a meaningful phrase/belief that guides them in everyday life. This motto will also become part of the final art piece.
